Punjab (Pakistan) Plastic Bag Ban

In 2008 the Lahore High Court in Pakistan ordered the Punjab government to ban the use of plastic bags in the province. The decision was made in response to a petition to the court, charging that the bags cause ongoing environmental degradation because they can neither be destroyed nor recycled.

In fact the country's federal government had already banned the bags in 1997 but the provincial government had failed to implement the ban. The 2008 decision required the province to finally enforce the ban.

The Punjab government maintained that because of neglect by the previous government to enforce the ban, the plastic industry has expanded enormously in the province and that thousands of families could thus be negatively impacted by a ban. The court, however, rejected the provincial government’s plea and ruled that the ban order be implemented immediately.
