Fort McMurray (Canada) Single-Use Bag Ban

Fort McMurray, Alberta, the capital of Canada's tar sands oil country, passed a bylaw in 2009 banning all single-use shopping bags. The ban went into effect in September 2010.

The ban includes plastic, paper and certain types of biodegradable shopping bags. A local highschool student is credited with spearheading the ban, having gathered over 2500 signatures in support of it.

Although a positive step, the ban does include several exemptions, including bags from fast-food restaurants, pharmacies, liquor stores and bags used to purchase bulk items like produce.
